ABOUT Joanna Thomasson
Being raised in a musical family, (dad is a retired music minister/pastor, mom is a singer and pianist, my brother and sister both can sing and play piano) I was destined to be in the music field. After becoming a member of the Texas Music Educators Association Allstate Choir my senior year, I realized I needed to pursue a music degree. I decided to go to Baylor University and graduated with a Bachelors of Music in Vocal Performance. My love for teaching began while in a college vocal pedagogy (the teaching of voice) class. From there, I taught private voice in many schools in the Austin area. After my kids were in middle school and high school, I decided I wanted to teach in the classroom and have a broader scope of positive, musical influence. I obtained my alternative teaching certification and taught middle school choir in Seguin for three years. Those years taught me extreme perseverance and patience. From there I went to New Braunfels, teaching middle school choir at OakRun Middle School and New Braunfels Middle School. My last year with NBISD I also taught ninth graders at the newly formed Ninth Grade Center.
It has always been my goal to end up teaching high school, but I wanted to wait until both of my kids were grown and graduated from high school. Teaching at the Ninth Grade Center made it all the more evident that I would be much more professionally satisfied and fulfilled teaching high school. How fortunate am I to be at Smithson Valley! The choir program is destined for greatness! There is no reason why Smithson Valley High School Choir should not be one of the top choirs in the state!
My husband, Chris and I met at Baylor and have been married for almost 30 years! We have two children, Meghan Barreras, married and living in Houston with her husband Andy and Jordan-very single and works at Pillars Daycare Center. We also have three dogs: Rutter, Ebony and we have the cutest Basset, Bessie.
I graduated from Baylor
I love to read, workout, sing (of course), watch NetFlix, eat Mexican food, watch college sports,I love Queen and the Beatles, but most of all, I love my dogs Ebony, Rutter and Bessie!
